GrapeGuard® – The vineyard revolution
Clay mineral-based UV protection for vines – Erbslöh introduces its first plant protection agent for the vineyard.
High radiation intensity, sunburn, heat stress and their consequences are threatening harvest yields and quality. The grapes’ growth and maturation is shifting to earlier, warmer periods, the risk from droughts and heatwaves in the precarious maturation stage increases.
The direct damage from dessication of the grapes and sunburn is considerable. Yield losses of 10-20% are common. GrapeGuard® acts here as natural protection. UV radiation is reflected away from the plant. As a result, the foliage evaporation rate declines and the vine’s water store is conserved. In this way the water is available for longer and more sustainably. The vine is able to deploy its own defences for longer.
A reduction in grape quality, which only becomes apparent later, constitutes another risk. The wine harvest is taking place earlier and earlier. Aromatic precursors and acidity are reduced. The risk of untypical early aging increases. This occurs with particular frequency in years with increased solar radiation and low precipitation. In Germany already one in five refusals of the quality wine standard is due to untypical
aging. These risks can be drastically reduced.
GrapeGuard® is based on various clay minerals. It is designed as a plant strengthening agent, with the aim of counteracting UV light damage. GrapeGuard® is applied to all the foliage, not just the grape zone. In this way it protects the whole plant and facilitates leisurely, even, metabolic exchange. Stress reactions in the vine that are detrimental to quality can be avoided early on. Protection can be adjusted to climatic conditions through dosage and frequency of application. Between a single, high-dose application and multiple applications of lower
dosages, it is possible to take ideal account of all location factors.
GrapeGuard® can be applied in conjunction with other plant protection agents of all types. This eliminates the need for additional tours of the vineyard. It reduces the machine time and also protects the soil and the environment.
A typical GrapeGuard® spray pattern – to the naked eye the thin layer is only partly visible, but it protects the vine very effectively against stress.
